Visit to the Port Authority
On the 21st and the 22nd of September, the masters in Maritime and Transport Law and Commercial and Company Law visited the beautiful site of the Rotterdam Port Authority. With the view over the Rotterdam skyline, we received coffee and got a warm welcome by the Legal department of the Rotterdam Port Authority. The next speaker was Mr. van Keulen, who gave an extensive presentation about all the movements which take place at the port on a daily basis. Furthermore, he elaborated on the ever changing trade circumstances and how Europe’s biggest port is constantly adapting to ensure their competitive position. For students who spend most of their time on academic research, the visualization and insight in the practical aspects of the trade and the operation of the port provided a valuable lesson. After the break, our very own Emily Dérogée gave a passionate presentation named “The sting is in the tail” and underlined the importance of a solid jurisdiction clause.
The last speaker of the day was Julian van de Velde, a lawyer at Smallegange N.V. In his presentation the students were guided through some of the cases he had worked on. The days turned out to be a great success for both students and speakers. We hope this great opportunity will be available for our students in the years to come. On behalf of the TTLA we would like to thank the Port Authority, Frouwke de Vries on behalf of the Erasmus School of Law and all the speakers for providing this experience.
